The life and work of Australian musician and author Nick Cave is on show at Canberra's National Library.

Nick Cave - The Exhibition features notebooks, diaries and photographs personally selected by Cave to tell his story.

The Library is the final destination for the travelling Arts Centre Melbourne exhibition.

Arts Centre Melbourne curator Janine Barrand says it offers a unique insight into Cave's mind.

"When you go and see a concert or listen to a CD you don't actually realise what goes on behind the scenes to put these songs together," she said.

"The exhibition actually explores some of Nick Cave's obsessions - he loved date stamps, he loved making lists."

Ms Barrand says the exhibition works on many levels.

"People who are fans of Nick Cave will actually find out things about him that they didn't know, particularly about his creative process," she said.

"It's a really special exhibition ... and it's a fascinating journey to trace."
